WP-Footnotes version 2.2
In case people are keeping track here and not over at the plugin repository, WP-Footnotes has been updated to version 2.2.
There are some pretty major changes behind the scenes since the 1.x versions of the plugin, but usage is pretty much the same. Check the plugin’s page for all the usage details and a download link.
Hello. Your plugin is exactly I need.
Only a hint: in ‘admin_panel.php’ file, change ‘PHP_SELF’ to ‘SCRIPT_URI’ in the _SERVER var you use to create the form target. It allows your plugin to work fine also with Wordpress MU.

Your plugin is absolutely fantastic, i used the latest version.
I have looked in the options page (options->footnotes), but i can’t get an option to chunk/shorten urls in footnote so that they won’t break my blog layout
So, can you add it to the next release? or give me a tip, i’ll edit it manually !

This plugin has been invaluable. For some reason, though, I can no longer get it to do a two-paragraph note as it once did. Have you any suggestions? (No, doesn’t work either. The double-paren’d passage simply sits up there with the rest of the text.)

Well, I was wrong. The new version does observe doubled <br />s. Still, if there’s a more “canonical” way to do it, I’d like to hear.

What an excellent plugin. Still I think there is a bug with IE and the smooth scroll. It makes the page jump up and down which is very confusing. Have a look: http://test.aenaon.info/blog23/2007/09/28/iposimiosis/

I installed the plugin and I had a problem.
I usually write paginated posts and when I insert for example, the numbers show up correctly in the text (9, 10, 11, 12…) but at the bottom of the page, the footnotes’ numbers are 9, 0, 1, 2…
I’d like the numbers to be 9, 10, 11, 12… maybe you could help me. And when I disable the pagination, the footnotes show up correctly again.

Hi again Sephi,
The problem is with your layout, rather than with the plugin.
There isn’t enough left margin on the footnotes list so the first digit in two digit numbers get cut off.
If you add
margin-left: 30px !important;to the ol.footnotes stylesheet directive in the footnotes options it will fix your problem.S.

The “two links to the same footnote” thing doesn’t work in your example. It makes two separate footnotes (7 and
with the same text.
Looking at it with Netscape 9/ OS X (essentially Firefox 2)

Hi Stephen,
You’re quite right. It’s a bad example. The last update included a new option to keep identical footnotes separate and I have that turned on. You can keep it turned off on your install for the described behaviour.

Hey Simon thanks for the great plugin. I am having the same problem Sephi was having with the footnotes list not displaying the number. I tried adding the margin-left code to my CSS options in the footnote options section in my admin page but it’s still not working properly. Any advice?

Great, great Plugin. How can I increase the (default) space between footnotes without adding a paragraph or break tag at the end of each? I’ve tried margin-top and padding-top but the space between notes just defaults to the line height.

Hi Roy,
I suspect you have just added the CSS declarations incorrectly. You certainly should be able to modify the space between each note by changing the padding or margins of the LI elements.

Hi, love this plugin, but cannot seem to adjust options. Anything other than resetting to default results in ‘a’ being placed in every option text box. Nothing I put in manages to persist. Any ideas?

Hi Byron,
As you mentioned, this is a known issue which I haven’t been able to track down yet. Some people have been able to fix the issue by turning off the ’smooth scroll’ option. Give that a go, otherwise stay tuned for an update (but probably not until the new year).

Brilliantly handy plugin thanks very much for giving this to us! I tend to use a lot of reference material so this will be very useful for me and hopefully make my posts a little richer as well.

Something like a fix for that pesky “a” problem
I did the following and now have a stable (that is no “a”s magically show up) wp-footnotes running on my site.
Hope this helps:
1) Deactivate
2) delete wp-footnotes folder from wp_contents/plugins
3) [using php myadmin] delete swas_footnote_options from the SQL DB
4) reload wp-footnotes into plugins folder
5) activate
So based on the above what I think is happening is that swas_footnote_options is not getting refreshed properly after a “return to defaults” command from the footnotes options page nor does it get rebuilt when the plugin is deactivated then reactivated.

Simon — This is a great plugin, but I’m doing something wrong. I think. I followed the install instructions, no problems. I had the options the way I wanted them, and the first test went beautifully, perfect footnotes. I decided to turn the smooth scrolling off (long story why), which I did — and now the options are completely messed up. They look okay on the options screen, but in the post everything shows up as the letter ‘a’ — footnote numbers, everything.
The options page shows no ‘a’s in any of the boxes, let me repeat. I tried turning scrolling back on, no luck.
Any suggestions? And many thanks.

Hi Rosina,
The ‘a’ problem has been a problem for a while and I’m still not sure what causes it. But it seems to have some relationship to the smooth scroll. Your symptoms seem to be a little different to others, so thanks for providing that info.
Have you tried clicking the “Reset Options to Defaults” button? If you haven’t could you do that and let me know if that solves the problem.

I did try to change back to the default values, without success.
So I uninstalled it, made sure it was deleted from the server, and then reinstalled. This time when I went into the options page the only thing I changed was to unclick the smooth scroll — and now it’s working perfectly. It’s a great plugin. I was surprised and pleased to see that it even manages to parse the ‘more’ command, splitting the footnotes so that the show up in the right spot.
So thanks! I’ll leave something for you in your paypal tip jar.

@0xCAFE: the security issue seems to arrise only if you have register_globals turned on. Which you most likely don’t have or probably shouldn’t have anyways.

For those concerned with the security issue — open footnotes.php, cut line 199. Open admin_panel.php, paste at line 20. Save both files. That’s it.

I can find/cut the line from footnotes.php using Wordpress’ web interface, but I can’t find admin_panel.php (to paste at line 20).
